You have probably driven by Nana’s with the intention of stopping by.  If you ever do, get prepared to spend quite some time inside. The first Nana’s store inaugurated 30 years ago as a result of an antique shopping obsession.  After filling up an attic, and out growing two stores, the current building was purchased and still holds the original store sign made by Nana’s son.

The store, full of character from the outside in is home to treasures new and old. Cabinets filled with hidden treasures waiting for a special eye to discover them. The walls hold antique paintings, frames and items too rare to name. Everything in the store from the cabinets to the chandeliers is for sale.

As soon as you walk in to the store you will immediately feel as if you have traveled back in time, and don’t worry–so have the prices. Everything in the store is sold at bargain prices, which might leave you feeling guilty as some are worth much more than what they are priced at. The staff will treat you like family; even offer you a cup of coffee. Come in relax and enjoy this fun-filled store!

Craving genuine Japanese cuisine? Fujinoya Restaurant will make you believe you have traveled straight to Asia. If you are expecting American style sushi do not think of walking in, but if you are ready to awaken your palate with authentic Japanese flavor, Fujinoya is your destination.

As you enter you are greeted by a sushi chef behind the counter. With a knife in hand and fresh fish he is ready to create and entertain (on most days). To the left you will find a medium size room with lounge like décor inspired by Japanese culture. The place is consistent, not usually over crowded or empty, for the most part just occupied by fun spirited Japanese locals.

Fujinoya likes to keep every dish authentic, and although it may be a bit scary to take a risk on a plate, you will most likely be surprised at how taste satisfying every plate is. The restaurant also infuses exotic tastes into some of their plates, such as the salmon mango roll. One of the most unusual and exciting plates of the restaurant is their ramen, and yes we can all purchase a ramen packet at the store for less than a buck, but the flavors and side dishes of this ramen are not easy to duplicate. As far as drinks go, they have a variety of Sakes but with $2 Kirin drafts, you can’t go wrong. The restaurant also offers a daily lunch special which changes every day. You can visit their website, and click on the calendar which will show you what the lunch special of the day is.

If you are ready to step out of the ordinary sushi world and into the authentic taste of Japanese sushi and cuisine, Fujinoya will not let you down.  They are open from 12pm-2pm for lunch and 5pm-10pm for dinner (double check websites for any holiday changes). Even if you just come in for appetizers or a few sake bombs, the friendly and relaxed atmosphere is definitely a place worth visiting.

Established in 1981, The Fountain Diner is not a place to come in for a quiet cup of coffee.  This diner is always busy, which says a lot about a place that has been in business for over twenty years. The diner is relatively big, with holiday like décor. The staff is welcoming, with a happy–to-be there attitude. No matter what day or time you come, you will most likely have to wait, though people do not seem to have a problem with this as the great service and good food make up for the waiting time.

The restaurant has a wide variety of food, ranging from hot pressed paninis, pizzas, and wraps to fresh seafood plates and char-boiled chops. No matter what your selection is, be certain it will taste amazing!

Although this may not be your everyday diner, they do offer great breakfast food. Service is fast, your coffee gets a refill right away and the omelettes are one of the most popular items on the menu.

The diner offers ample parking, as the clientele has seemed to not stop growing over the years.  If you become a regular, get ready for the waitress and hostess to try their hardest to seat you in your favorite place, know your selection and of course your name.

Another upside to the diner, which is not likely to be expected at other diners, is their selection of wines and beers: you can even order a cosmo! Needless to say, there is always a day where a good diner is much needed. Opened just six months ago, this new local venue will become a favorite in no time. Restaurant and Wine Bar, Caffé Azzuri is set in the central area of Westchester County, bringing residents a great place to enjoy an intimate dining experience.

Anthony Perrotta has carved out a niche on Central Avenue catering to both the well versed Italian gastronome and the newbie connoisseur.  Perrotta took over Dante’s Gourmet Deli in1997, from two families, one of the men having been named Dante.  Anthony had plenty of experience growing up in his own family’s food business in Mount Vernon, New York as well as learning the ins and outs of their import/export business in Genoa, Italy.

On my recent visit, Anthony greeted everyone who entered with a vibrant smile and special greeting.  He waited on each customer with a warmth that made you feel as if you were a part of his family.  After he was done helping the last customer he came over and greeted me and listened intently as I explained my mission.  When I finished talking and asked him if he would be amenable to being a part of this new venture he paused and asked me if I had bought and fresh mozzarella.  I said I had just bought some slices of fresh smoked mozzarella and the next thing I knew he had wrapped up a whole fresh mozzarella for me and some homemade vinaigrette to drizzle over it.  I couldn’t wait to get home.  I was already salivating from the sights and smells in the store but now knowing the treat I had in my bag…YUM

Anthony’s recipes for osso buco, delicious soups, arancini and brasciole have been passed down by his grandmother Louisa and his mother-in-law.  The dedicated chef wakes up hours before the sun to make his fresh homemade mozzarella and ravioli. He makes his ravioli starting at 3:00am each Saturday morning, churning out about 100 boxes. This process is done in house using a 50 year old Lombi pasta machine. Anthony relies on his touch to gauge when the dough is ready to be put in the machine. That kind of scrutiny can only come from years of experience passed down from generation to generation and when you eat a plate of the dreamy ravioli you feel a part of the family’s heritage.

Among the many hard to find items Dante’s stocks is a delicacy called Burrata which is Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. The outer shell is solid mozzarella while the inside is mozzarella and cream.  Other eclectic items include Italian seed packets for your home garden, chinotto which is a slightly bittersweet non alcoholic beverage, and orzata syrup imported from Italy.  Antony also provides many organic items for his health conscious shoppers.

Dante’s offers hot entrees with dishes like eggplant parmigiana, stuffed mushrooms, paninis and pizza. On any given day at lunch time patrons can be found lined up out the door.  There are also cold cases stocked with many types of cheeses and meats which are delivered fresh from Arthur Avenue each morning.

Adding to the old world atmosphere, Anthony often speaks to his loyal customers in their native tongue.  Dante’s is an experience you will never forget and you will want to repeat over and over.
